Introduction
"A Dialogue on Prescription Drug Safety: Seeking Common Ground" is a series of public policy forums on the safety of medicines in the United States. Our focus is on recent legislation to strengthen the regulation of prescription drug safety and reform the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Our program brings together a diverse array of scholars, policymakers, public health experts, patient advocates and health industry leaders to explore common ground policies for strengthening America's prescription drug safety system.
Each event will be moderated by Dr. James Thurber, Director of American University's Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies.
New Survey Finds Strong Public Interest in Prescription Drug Safety Issues
American University's Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies announced results from a national survey assessing public views on safety of prescription medicines, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and overall satisfaction with the U.S. health care system.
"At a time when Congress is reviewing and debating legislation to strengthen the safety of prescription medicines and overhaul the FDA, this survey validates that drug safety is a real concern for the American public," said Dr. James Thurber, Director, Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies, American University. "The survey shows some support for the concept of a Food and Drug Administration Revitalization Act, however, there is a clear desire and expectation among participants for regulators to balance speed of approvals with their responsibility of reducing safety risks."
Public Policy Implications of the Food and Drug Administration Revitalization Act (FDARA)
On September 12, American University's Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies and FORA.tv brought together former FDA commissioners David A. Kessler, M.D., and Mark B. McClellan, M.D., Ph.D., to discuss the anticipated public policy implications that will result from the passage and implementation of the Food and Drug Administration Amendment Act of 2007 and enhancements of America's prescription drug safety system.
